The art of vision......experience the extra time and care we take
The eye with Astigmatism.
Astigmatism is a very common focusing defect (90% of all spectacle lenses include a correction for astigmatism) and can be associated with long sight or short sight. The non astigmatic eye has a completely spherical cornea (like a football). An astigmatic eye has an oval or elliptical cornea (like a rugby ball).
This oval, egg like, shape is totally natural and tends to stay the same through out life. Light from a distant object is focused by the oval cornea and crystalline lens to a cylindrical shaped blur on the retina. The natural focusing muscles of the eye are relaxed and distance vision is blurred. Using the focusing muscles cannot improve the clarity of their image on the retina.
