The art of vision......experience the extra time and care we take

practice history

Established since 1931

Henry Morgan Opticians has provided top quality professional eyecare in Highams Park since 1931. Henry Morgan had served a five-year apprenticeship with Batemans Opticians in the City and studied at night school achieving his professional qualifications in 1929.

The practice was originally in a small half-shop in The Broadway, Highams Park.  The eye examination equipment was very different in 1929 when he opened, his illuminated eye test chart was made by his father, who taught carpentry at Selwyn School, the chair for patients to sit on was borrowed from his father’s desk and the waiting room chairs were taken from around the dining room table.

The desk chair that was used for eye examinations was not height adjustable, as they are today, so children had to sit on telephone directories to be tall enough to see the test chart.

In those exciting days at the start of the NHS optical service when the NHS range of spectacles were free of charge to all, the demand was so great that the manufacturing industry could not keep up supplies and there was an unprecedented 18 month wait for spectacles! This seems unbelievable in today’s world where spectacles can be ready in under an hour.

Philip Morgan, the current Principal, joined the practice in 1979, his commitment to the highest professional standards of service and clinical skills built on the foundation stones of the past and set new standards for the future.

The practice relocated to its current premises in The Avenue in 1984 to accommodate the continued demand that this forward thinking philosophy generated.  The refurbishment and reinvestments of 1997 and 2004 established the ultra high-tech, practice which today provides state-of-the-art eye care fit for this new millennium.

State of the art equipment

The state of the art consulting rooms are bristling with cutting-edge technology, facilitating early detection of some of the most devastating eye diseases. More than this, we can offer honest, professional advice on modern treatments for dyslexia, laser refractive surgery and myopia control. And, of course, the best spectacle prescription possible.

Despite these humble beginnings, he was dedicated to a caring personal approach, and the practice quickly grew to serve the needs of the bustling Highams Park community.

Despite the difficulties of the war years and the shortages caused by the huge demand at the start of the NHS in 1948, the reputation of the practice for thorough, un-hurried, professional eye examinations and gentlemanly service

was maintained.
